                                                TOOLS (above map)

The tools available for use with ACT Locate are located in the area immediately above the map display on the Map Page. The tools that display when the map interface is first opened are the Standard tools. Those that are displayed on clicking the   tag are the Advanced tools. The advanced tools require the user to have first selected a data layer to be active. Refer to Layer List – Active Layer for details on how to do this.

Standard Tools

These tools all operate on the current map display without any prior data layer selection by the user. Each is reviewed below.

         Toggle Overview Map

This button toggles the Overview (birds-eye view) Map in the upper left hand corner of the map. By default the Overview Map is turned on when you start ACT Locate. Click once on this button with the mouse and the Overview Map will disappear. Click again and the Overview Map will reappear.

        Zoom In

This button allows you to zoom in on the map as if you were getting closer to the ground from a great height. Click on the button. Then either:

  a.    Left-click with your mouse on a single point on the map. A new map will be drawn that enlarges the area round          point you selected. OR

b.      Left-click with your mouse at a point on the map BUT HOLD your finger on the left mouse button and ‘swipe’ a rectangle on the map to cover the area of interest to you, then release the left mouse button. A new map will be drawn that enlarges the area selected such that the extent of the map image roughly matches that of the area ‘swiped’.

         Zoom Out

This button allows you to zoom out on the map as if you were getting further away from the ground. Click on the button. Then either:

             a.   Left-click with your mouse on a single point on the map. A new map will be drawn  that increases the area viewed around the point you selected.  OR

             b.      Left-click with your mouse at a point on the map BUT HOLD your finger on the left mouse button and ‘swipe’ a rectangle on the map. then release the left mouse button. A new map will be drawn that increases the area displayed. The relationship between the area ‘swiped’ and the final display is such that the smaller the area ‘swiped’ the larger the area displayed.

          Pan

This button allows you to move across the map at the same view scale. Click on the button and then:

Left-click with your mouse at a point on the map closer to the part you would like to see AND HOLD your finger on the left mouse button. Drag the mouse away from the area you wish to see. This will bring that part of the map of more interest to you into view.

         Zoom to Full Extent

Left-click with your mouse on this tool and the map will redraw showing the full extent of the ACT. Remember that many of the layers will not be visible at this scale.

          Zoom to Last Extent

Left-click with your mouse on this tool and the map will redraw showing the map extent that displayed prior to the last change in map extent. Further clicks on this tool will simply toggle between these two map views.

         Identify

This button allows you to identify the features at a particular location on the map. Click on the button then move the mouse crosshairs onto the map where you wish to identify features and left-click.

ACT Locate will retrieve attribute information for all features within a predefined distance of the click point for all layers that are displayed, then return the results in a separate browser window. You may need to expand or scroll within this window to see all the results.

After viewing the results you can either minimise or close the window.

      Measure

This button allows you to make measurements on the map as either a single line segment or a number of line segments. Click on the button and a small measurement results display will appear in the top-left portion of the map.   Position the mouse crosshairs onto the map at the point from which your first measurement will be made. Left-click the mouse to establish your starting point. This will place a small red dot at this point.

As you move the mouse away the Segment part in the measurement display will show the amount (in metres of ground distance) that it has moved from the starting point. Position the mouse crosshairs at the second point you wish to include in your measurement and left-click. A second red dot will be created and a red line will be drawn between the first and second point. The Total part in the measurement display will now record the length of the first segment and the Segment part will display the distance your mouse has moved from this second point.

You can repeat this step as often as required. It is also possible to change the map view during a measure. After commencing a measure, select any of the zoom or extent tools and redefine the map view. Then once again highlight the measure tool and continue measuring segments.

To clear a measurement (both values and red lines) left-click on the    button. It is not possible to undo measures. The measurement display can be removed by clicking on any other tool.
